2026 East Gwillimbury Honouree

Bill Gianopoulos

It’s difficult to tell who’s happier in Dr. Angela Smith’s portrait, which was taken with one of her sweet and furry clients at the East Gwillimbury Veterinary Hospital, founded by Angela in 2015.  Her concern for the health and well-being of animals and their humans extends far beyond the walls of her clinic. In 2017, she brought Community Veterinary Outreach to York Region, a non-profit helping people in vulnerable situations and their pets across Canada to stay together, access human healthcare, veterinary care, and local resources.

Aligning her beliefs with her efforts, which led to building her clinic and acting as Regional Director for the non-profit’s York Region chapter, Angela has been able to provide uniquely full circle support and care to the animals and their humans, her community and well beyond.  With her heart focused on the mental and physical well-being of her clients and community, Dr. Angela Smith has been able to create much more meaningful connections and outcomes for everyone involved.

Protecting and honouring the bond between each animal and its human is paramount to Angela.  There have been many times over the years that Angela has offered shelter and care to a pet, while the owner receives the support and attention they need to get back on their feet.  Many shelters and health facilities don’t allow pets, but by fostering the animals she not only gives the pet owners peace of mind that their best friend is safe and loved, she also gives them motivation to focus on their healing, rebuilding stability all while knowing their loving pet is waiting for them.

Deeply connected to her community, Angela actively serves on the Mount Albert Sports Day committee, which includes organizing the annual Pet Contest.  Her veterinary clinic sponsors the Sport’s Day 5k Run with a prize basket and as well, they raffle off prize baskets to raise money for the Community Veterinary Outreach of York Region.  Since 2016 the East Gwillimbury Veterinary Hospital has been sponsoring the East Gwillimbury Eagles Hockey Club, the Figure Skating Club and the York Region 4-H Club.  Hosted by the Mount Albert Lions Club, the Mount Albert Santa Claus Parade is an annual community event that Angela, her team and her family look forward to the most.

In 2025 the East Gwillimbury Animal Hospital won the Readers’ Choice Diamond Award for Best Animal Hospital.
