Stan and Mary Neal

2026 Lifetime Achievement Honourees

Legacy is defined by the impact our daily actions and our character made on others.  Lasting legacy is when we leave something in people, which is precisely what Stan and Mary Neal have been doing for most of their lives.  Pictured standing together, outside of the Family Meeting & Quiet Room (named in their honour) at Mackenzie Health Hospital in Richmond Hill, their eyes reflecting their pride.

Both served on the board of York Central Hospital (now known as Mackenzie Health), with Stan contributing to the Foundation Board and leading it’s first capital fundraising campaign, while Mary chaired the Quality Committee.  Mary fondly remembers and thinks often about a young man named David, whom she met through volunteer work with the York Region Literacy Society.  Through their work and friendship, David overcame his literacy challenges, got a great job and now lives a much fuller life.

The landscape of downtown Unionville would not be the quaint and historical village we know today, were it not for Stan – rallying against the expansion of Main Street (originally founded in 1794) and instead proposing a bypass, which was accepted, approved and built.  Stan played a key role in establishing and growing the Unionville Festival.  He was the first appointed chair member, and now more than five decades later the event is bigger than ever, drawing thousands of people and showcasing the pride of historic downtown Unionville.

Stan has long been admired for his steady leadership and unwavering sense of responsibility. He understands that strong communities are not built overnight - they are cultivated through trust, consistency, and vision. His work has often focused on bringing people together, bridging gaps, and creating opportunities where others may have seen obstacles. Alongside him, Mary has been a powerful force of compassion and connection. Her ability to make people feel seen, heard, and valued has left a lasting impression on everyone she encounters. Their financial contributions often take place behind the scenes, yet their impact is profound. They both have a natural gift for nurturing relationships and fostering environments where people feel safe to grow, contribute, and belong.

Together, Stan and Mary embody a partnership that amplifies their individual strengths. Their shared values of integrity, generosity, and a deep sense of community have guided their actions and inspired others to follow their example. They have shown that meaningful change does not always require grand gestures; sometimes, it is the consistent, everyday acts of care and commitment that leave the greatest mark.
